Family room wall shelf

The entire summer I have been wanting to get started witht his project but our lives have been so busy this summer that I haven't been able to get started. So behold... this is the beginging of my wall shelving unit for the family room.
This image shows you from a birds eye view how it would look from the top, I haven't decided what design to go with so feel free to provide input. The dotted line in the image is represnts where wall ends.

This second image shows a estimate of how many shelf units I can fit, there is a hole in the middle of the shelfs because that is where the TV is going.

Smart Rabits

Lately I have been all into tech stuff, learning about electronic chips and etcs.. just getting a little more into my hobbie. While I was browsing around in peoples website I found this smart rabbit, pretty cool stuff. You would ask, what does a rabbit and computer have in common.. well you are going to have to find out on your own.

Smart rabbits, I want one.. :D

LEDs

I hae always been interested on doing more with my computer.. I keep thinking about getting an electronic course at Seneca just to learn quickly. Today I found a project that is teach me how to turn on a LED using a parallel port. I found this website while browsing on Ashish's blog. I found Ashish's blog while browsing through some of the Hack-a-day projects

I also found the Electronics club which contains quite a bit of information about different electronic devices

"Mac"me

On my second semester of universitry I got a job with the Computer-Lab working as a helpdesk-network asistant-do it all boy. I was responsible of ensuring that the computer would run when I was on shift. We had all sort of computer that the students would use. Windows was the main OS used, but we also had Macs for the Graphic design people, Solaris for the computer people, and some AS/400 and other stuff.

During my first semeter working in the University lab I develop an interested for Networking, Unix, and Graphics. It was probably my second or third time in my life that I used a Machintosh. Somewhere around that time it is when I said to myself "When I grow up and get married and I have earn my own money, I want to have a computer with Windows, one with Linux, and one with Mac. Of course I also want a Solaris, a Silicon Graphics and etcs.. but those are out of rearch.

Well yesterday that dream, that vision...became a reality. I bought a mini-mac. I must say, my computer budget was well put to use. :D

This is how it came packaged. The computer is just a square'ish looking box, but a very slick box :D

When you first open it, you find the manual and some CDs which you immidiatly toss to the side. After all, they don't say "Stop!" or "Warning: Your house will blow up if you ...!". So off to the side and for toilet reading :)

And then when you unveil the computer.. it just greets you with a nice looking white background with a grey apple.

Under that is a little remote that allows you to use the computer as if it was the stereo system

And this is final setup

Found a new possibility for a blog

Roller seems good. It has well known users, like IBM and Sun :)

The never ending story

I continue to have problems with the blog. The good news is that I fix the problem that I was having before, where the data was getting corrupted and it caused the errors related to "500 Error". The bad news is that the application now hangs, every so often, probably about every other day, sometimes more frequently, not only that but it causing my router to get all confused and I also have to reset my router. NOT GOOD!. Anyways.. I considering changing to a different software... and I found a list of all the blogs that use Java.. http://java-source.net/open-source/bloggers/snipsnap

Now you see me.. now you don't see me..

The blog has been up and down due to some stupid bug on the software.

Everytime someone tried to access the blog, blojsom (the program that I use to display the blog) would recreate the template and plugin tables in the database. I managed to keep the blog running for a long time by manually reverting the changes. But lately, the traffic for our homepage has increased and the blog kept going down more often, so eventually I got tired of manually recreating the tables. I contacted the developers and they told me where the problem was. So, I downloaded the source recompiled it with the changes, dropped the new files and voilà! the problem "should" go away.

This just reminds one the reasons why I choose a java based blog, so that I could hack it :).

Holiday craking

GJ found this out on a webpage and I think is a very interesting article about doing a forensic job in a hackked boxed. I can do some basic diagnostic, but not anything compared to what this guy did. Everytime my box has gotten hacked (once) I am often so worried about bringing the server back up as fast as I can that I just do a quick analysis perhaps in the future I can arrange to have a another backup server on the side just so that I can easily start a new server and do the proper analysis as to how my box got hacked.

Blog problems..

A few days ago our blog went down. Some weird bug caused some problems on the blogger application and I was able to restart it that easily.

For those who care.. Some entries in the plugin and template table got wipped out. Aparently some bug that I still need to find more details about.

Photos update

By popular demand I have added the pictures to the east coast before the pictures of the quebec trip. I guess people are more curious about remote places with ocean view.

You can look at the pictures by going to the Photos > 2007 > East Coast

We also took some video enjoy.

In this video we are arriving to the location, there is a lot of noise but you can here the driver talking on the cellphone with another boat about where the whales are located, and you can also here him giving us direction on what to do once we spot a whale.

In this video, you can here and see how one whale (the group leader) is calling the other whales. This are blue pilot whales.

One thing that made me upset was that when we got to the location the boat captain didn't turn off the two massive engines that he had in order to not hurt the whales.

The east coast..

This is a quick post.

We arrived yesterday around 11:30 from the East coast. We went to Halifax, PEI, Cape Breton. We saw some whale up and close and in the wild, we saw two mooses, one bear. And everything was beautiful. I will upload the pictures and video either today or tomorrow. Today Larina has a tennis match and I am not sure if I will get a chance to work on the pictures.

2007 pictures added

I just realized that is half way through the year 2007, and I didn't have a link to pictures of this year. Things have been quite busy around the house so I haven't done much to teh website. This blog is carring a lot of of the updates because either of us will update with info about what we are doing, or what is hapenning in our lifes.
I have now added a link to the 2007 pictures. The pictures are in flickr so I just added a link to each activity of this year by tag. Or you can view them all together if you want. Check out the new link under Photos > 2007

postfix setup

I found several guides on the web about how to setup postfix, but the one that I found help me were:

The trick to setup postfix ended up being not trying to understand what Ubuntus had, but rather delete everything and understand postfix. I started writting my own postfix and this was the result:

main.cf

# See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version

myhostname = myserver.mydomain.net
mydomain = mydomain.net
inet_interfaces = $myhostname, localhost

smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous

# related to how to connect
transport_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/transport
deadbeats_destination_concurrency_limit = 50

# masquerade the mails
masquerade_domains = mydomian.net !myserver.mydomain.net
masquerade_exceptions = root

smtpd_delay_reject = yes

minimal_backoff_time = 1000s
maximal_backoff_time = 8000s

smtpd_recipient_limit = 16

recipient_domain,reject_unauth_destination, permit

# See /usr/share/doc/postfix/TLS_README.gz in the postfix-doc package for
# information on enabling SSL in the smtp client.

sasl_passwd (before executing postmap)

# remember to enclose your relay host name in square brackets, like in the main.cf file above
# Your user name to the relay host is joe, and the password is blog
[smtp.yahoo.server.com] joe:joepasswd

transport (before executing postmap)

# you need a space character between the name and the colon
myserver :
# you need a space character between the name and the colon
myserver.mydomain.net :

Make sure to restart postfix. If any error occurs take a look at the /var/log/mail.log Once postfix is setup you should be able to send emails outside of your network.

Camera link added

For a while already I have had a camera setup on my front yard, to monitor the garbage pickup, my tulips and other things. I have now added a link on the left menu so that you can enjoy a view of our front yard.

I developed a small web application using dojo that displays the events of a specific time during the day using a slideshow.

FYI.. It doesn't work with IE 7, sorry. It will eventually one day
